You might be surprised to learn how much companies are allowed to hide about the dangers their products pose. The current safety standards for personal care products is essentially non-existent. The US government does nothing to regulate the ingredients in the products we use. Companies are starting to realize that customers are valuing toxic free products. They are getting clever with their marketing by using words like “natural, organic, good for you, non-toxic”. The problem is that those words mean nothing because there are no laws regarding the words or strategies a company can use to market their products.

So, this means that the burden is on us to figure out what is healthy, what is harmful, and what are safe choices to use in our homes. This guide to toxic free body care products is designed to help you make safe choices in the daily products you are using on your body.

Sometimes it can feel overwhelming to make the switch to toxic-free products. Reading labels can seem daunting and it is oftentimes hard to know what to believe as product claims aren’t always true. My biggest piece of advice is to search for every products ingredient list. Just because a brand makes a non-toxic shampoo does not mean that their conditioner is safe. Take everything product by product, not brand by brand.

This resource is designed to ease that overwhelming feeling. My goal was to bring you a compiled list of non-toxic personal care products to refer back to as you need. Not everyone will love the same products, so I have included as many products as I could in each category. I hope this eases the burden of having to research each individual product on your own as I have done the work already.

I use The Environmental Working Group Website and App to check the ingredients in my products. Be sure to research any questionable ingredients or EWG ratings yourself.

    1. Bentonite Clay Mask – Combine 1 tablespoon bentonite clay, 1 teaspoon organic apple cider vinegar, and 1 teaspoon of filtered water in a bowl. Spread evenly over the armpit and allow the mixture to sit for 10-20 minutes. Wash it off with a warm washcloth or in the shower.
    2. Apple Cider Vinegar Spray – Combine 4 drops of rosemary, 4 drops of lavender, and 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar in a 2oz glass spray bottle. Fill the rest of the bottle with filtered water. Before going to bed, give the bottle a gentle shake and spray both armpits.
    3. Exfoliate & Moisturize Regularly – Mix natural sea salt with some organic oil. Massage the mixture into your armpits, then moisturize after with jojoba oil.

Non-Toxic Hair Products

1. Goop Salt Scrub: This cleanses the hair and scalp of product buildup, oil, and dirt.
2. Hair Rinse Detox (from Whole Beauty): The acidity of apple cider vinegar helps to balance the pH of your hair, and it also strips off the residue left by traditional hair products.
   • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
   • 8 ounces of water
   • 3 drops each of lavender and rosemary to stimulate the scalp and help mask the scent of the vinegar.
   • Combine the vinegar, water, and essential oil in the jar and stir or shake to mix.
   • Pour over or spray through clean, wet hair. Leave it on for 1 to 2 minutes, then rinse it out.
